In Remembrance: Texas Tragedy 1937

New London, Texas Gas Explosion -1937


On March 18, 1937 a massive gas explosion ripped through the New London, Texas school, killing and injuring hundreds of students and faculty. In nearby Tyler, Texas, Mother Frances Hospital was preparing for their opening day festivities, planned for the next day. Due to the horrific explosion at the New London school, Mother Frances Hospital opened it's doors a day early to care for the wounded. David Brown, a former government and political journalist, was intrigued by the story and began to do research. David decided to set out to write a book once he began his research. In Brown's research he talked to numerous survivors, including 83-year-old Jimmie Jordan Robinson. Jimmie, a 3rd grader at the time of the explosion shares recounts her memories from that day. Together, Jimmie and David share their story about the impact that day has had on their lives.
